Russia during WWII fought to protect their lands and to get their vengeance on Germany. The Soviet Union played a major role in World War II. Their massive attack from the East and the rest of the Allies attack from the west caused the downfall of the Third Reich. Russia trained and lost more soldiers than any other country. After the war it was estimated that Russia had 9 million soldiers killed or missing, 18 million wounded, and more than 12 million civilian casualties.
