After German forces surrendered and retreated from Russia, Russia planned there counter strike to get there revenge on Germany. In late 1943, Stalin met with president Roosevelt and Winston Churchill at a meeting called the Teheran Conference. This conference agreed that the allies would invade France in June of 1944 and at the same time Russia would invade from the east. By April, 1945 Russia had captured Vienna, Austria. On April 23, 1945 Soviet soldiers reached Berlin, Germany with 1 million soldiers and 20,000 artillery. Germany defended there capital with all they had. During the battle, Soviet soldiers met up U.S. soldiers from the Elbe River. On April 30, 1945 Hitler killed himself seeing his defeat. On May 2, 1945 Germany surrendered. Victory in Europe had been achieved. It it estimated that 325,000 Germans including civilians were killed. |
